  • After working for over three decades as a graphic designer, Spencer decided to spread his creative wings and explore further his long-standing passion for nature, plants and gardens – and in particular garden design.

  • Following almost four years of study at leading land-based college Capel Manor, he achieved an advanced diploma in garden design along with two additional supplementary certificates.

He combined these qualifications with existing transferrable skills of natural creativity; extensive design knowledge; fastidious attention-to-detail; organisational skills; and decades of business experience to form Spatial Garden Design.

The mission – design beautiful gardens to make a positive impact on people’s lives. If this excites you as much as it does us, we’d love to hear from you, so why not say hello

Meet the designer.

I enjoy working with plant textures and colours and premium materials. My signature style is probably contemporary with a traditional influence, a planting palette of cool and tertiary colours featuring hot highlights and contrasting foliage, complemented by ornamental trees and clipped evergreens to provide structure.

How we work

  • A garden is a very personal thing and we feel it should always be reflective of your personality, which is why we invest time and effort into getting to know you to understand exactly what you want from the space – and perhaps what you hadn’t considered. We then take those unique characteristics and elements and translate them into the design.

  • We take great pride in our work and presentations to deliver a professional, premium service for the best possible results.

We combine the precision and versatility of digital tech with the more tactile qualities of hand-drawing to produce highly-crafted plans and visuals – perhaps think of it as hand-drawing on computer as opposed to being computer-generated. We also produce drawings purely by hand when required.

Although proficient in Vectorworks (the industry standard CAD software for landscape design), we prefer to produce our design work in Adobe Illustrator (dedicated illustration software). We find this approach brings a warmer, more personal touch – which is especially important to us when designing such a personal space as a residential garden.

Examples of our design work can be viewed in the Projects section, with the various types of drawings explained in the FAQ section.

Our approach to your project and producing our drawings.

Why use a garden designer?

  • A garden is usually the largest individual space of a property and often a vastly underestimated asset. Developing it to its maximum potential can be a worthwhile investment and could easily add considerable value to the property.

  • However, as no two gardens are the same, with even adjoining neighbours having completely unique conditions, knowing where to start can be a daunting task – especially if you don’t have any horticultural or landscaping experience – but it doesn’t need to be.

This is where a garden designer comes in.

Aside from being well-versed in the principles of design and bringing cohesion to the project, a good designer will also possess a wide range of practical knowledge and understand: aspect; light, sun & shade; micro-climates; soil; trees, shrubs & herbaceous plants; water-features; focal points; materials; levels; drainage; construction; lighting; privacy; security; and vernacular – to name just a few.

Creating a garden can also be expensive, yet design fees are usually only a small fraction of the overall project costs, but could be the defining factor in the success of the space and it being something unique and truly exceptional.

Perhaps think of it like this – commissioning a garden designer could easily save the equivalent amount, and more, in costly mistakes and wasted time, with the end result being way more impressive and better value by far.

So why not get in touch to see how we can help…

Vision, creativity, cohesion, knowledge and expertise.

Inspiration for your design

  • Whatever type of garden you have – be it a suburban family garden; urban garden; small courtyard garden; front garden; or perhaps a roof garden – establishing the type of garden you want to create within that space is the beginning of the journey and where we start looking for inspiration, so there are some things we’ll explore.

  • A BRIEF HISTORY OF GARDENS

The history of gardens is a long and colourful one. Gardens have been purposely designed for millennia – from the earliest Egyptian, Greek and Roman gardens, Persian paradise gardens and Japanese Zen gardens; to Medieval gardens; formal Renaissance gardens; informal English Landscape and Picturesque gardens; Victorian gardens; the Arts & Crafts movement; the Minimalist and Modernist movements; right through to the modern and contemporary gardens of today – with many nuances in-between. These historical styles are still influencing garden design today, most notably:

    ❊ Arts & Crafts gardens
    ❊ Minimalist gardens
    ❊ Modernist gardens
    ❊ Paradise gardens
    ❊ Zen gardens

    GARDEN STYLES

Strictly speaking, the style of a garden is the use of geometry. A formal style uses symmetry whereas an informal style uses asymmetry. For example, a knot garden would be a formal layout and symmetrical, whereas a wild garden would be an informal layout and asymmetrical. Whichever you style you prefer, establishing a strong geometry is key to a successful design.

    GARDEN THEMES

A theme (confusingly often referred to as style), is the idea for a garden conceived from any influence, for example: an historical garden movement; a favourite colour such as a white garden; or even site conditions. Listed below are some popular themes:

    ❊ Bog gardens
    ❊ Coastal gardens
    ❊ Colour gardens
    ❊ Cottage gardens
    ❊ Container gardens
    ❊ Cut-flower gardens
    ❊ Dry gardens
    ❊ Ecological garden
    ❊ Gravel gardens
    ❊ Japanese gardens
    ❊ Mediterranean gardens
    ❊ Parterre gardens
    ❊ Permaculture gardens
    ❊ Produce gardens
    ❊ Rain gardens
    ❊ Re-wilding gardens
    ❊ Rock gardens
    ❊ Sculpture gardens
    ❊ Secret gardens
    ❊ Tropical gardens
    ❊ Wildlife gardens
    ❊ Water gardens
    ❊ Woodland gardens

Themes can be good for inspiration but we find interpretation works best, where we sensitively develop the idea with our design expertise and knowledge. Themes should always be handled sensitively to avoid creating a contrived pastiche.

Alternatively, there’s no need to follow a theme at all, as ultimately, the layout, elements, choice of materials, plant selection and how they are combined will create the look and feel of the finished garden – which is why the design process is such a unique and individual journey.

All potential styles, themes and influences are explored at the briefing stage, where we guide you through the decision making to arrive at a solution best for you, your home and the vernacular.

Exploring design styles and themes.

The design process

A simple step-by-step guide to designing your garden.

There’s a lot involved in planning a garden – from the first meeting to the last plant going in the ground and beyond. To make the process easy to understand, we’ve created this useful project guide.

PROJECT GUIDE

  • On contacting us, we’ll schedule a call to briefly discuss your project and budget. If agreeable, we can arrange a meeting to show our portfolio to ensure our approach and services are right for you. We’ll also provide you with some literature for your perusal, including full details of all our services, pricing structure and terms & conditions.

We also encourage you to create your own mood board to share with us at the next meeting – the project briefing. This helps us understand what inspires you, so we can create something unique and personal to you.

    Please note:
These initial consultations are free of charge.

BRIEF

  • This stage is about familiarising ourselves with the project, the site, and just as importantly, getting to know you better. This involves us filling out a detailed questionnaire together to establish your likes and dislikes; wish-list; what you desire from the space; and how you intend to use it. Depending on the project, we may also take some photographs and basic measurements of the site at this point to assist in providing a quotation.

    Please note:
The briefing and the subsequent stages are chargeable.

INTRODUCTION

CONFIRMATION

  • Following the briefing, you’ll be sent the following for your approval:

    ❊ Full written brief
    ❊ Completed questionnaire

    ❊ Itemised quotation
    ❊ Acceptance form

    Please note:
This paperwork forms the basis of the contract which needs to be signed and returned in order to commission the project prior to the commencement of any design work.

SITE SURVEY

  • The Site Survey is an essential part of the project as it forms the foundation of all design work. This involves taking detailed measurements; photographs; videos; and documenting important aspects of the site, and also includes drawing-up a detailed scale plan which forms the template from which all drawings are produced. If the site is extremely complex we would advise to commission a professional independent surveyor.

    Please note:
It is not possible to proceed with any design work without completing a full site survey.

DESIGN

  • Starting with with your site survey scale plan as a template, we produce a series of rough concept sketches, leading through to the final design. Depending on the project, we can agree interim design reviews or share concept sketches to discuss direction and incorporate any comments.

Once complete, we provide a printed presentation document that includes:

    ❊ The final design
    ❊ Written brief response
    ❊ Mood boards

Any minor revisions are discussed at this point prior to final sign-off.

DETAILING

  • On approval of the design work, the next stage is detailing, which is the technical phase. To provide a smooth transition from design to build and ensure you have everything in place, we offer the following services:

    ❊ Design specification
    ❊ Setting-out plans
    ❊ Planting plans
    ❊ Construction drawings

❊ Project planning

    ❊ Project schedules
    ❊ Project costings

    ❊ Project tendering

We would highly recommend these factors are addressed prior to breaking ground and can advise you accordingly.

    Please note:
Detailing can only be addressed once the design stage is finalised, as the approved design always dictates construction detail and costing.

BUILD

  • Although we do not currently offer landscaping services, we can help you source the right contractors to construct your garden – or you may wish to use your own. We can also assist you with the following aspects of the build:

    ❊ Project advice
    ❊ Project monitoring
    ❊ Project management

    ❊ Plant schedules
    ❊ Plant sourcing
    ❊ Planting out

Whichever services you decide upon, we are able to liaise directly with the contractors on your behalf. Alternatively, we can simply hand-over the drawings and the reins to you – the decision is entirely yours.

SUPPORT

  • A garden is a living thing and ever-changing, so it’s important to protect your investment to ensure it remains as intended and at its absolute best – so our input doesn’t end once the build is complete. We remain committed to the project and will periodically review the garden’s progress and be on-hand to answer any questions you may have. We also offer the following additional services:

    ❊ Maintenance schedules
    ❊ Maintenance advice

FAQs

Your questions answered and other useful information

We hope you find the information on our site helpful for your garden design journey. To assist you further, we’ve also compiled a list of common questions and other related information, but for anything not covered here, just get in touch and we’ll be happy to answer any other questions you may have.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Garden Designer
Works mainly on residential projects and provides a more personal, focused service, paying close and particular attention to the finer nuances of design.

    Landscape Architect
Similar to a garden designer, but also formally qualified to work on large commercial and public space projects, but may also work on residential projects.

    Landscaper
Landscapers build gardens – but in the absence of a more considered design, their solutions may only perform the most basic functions. However, they may have an in-house garden designer or use freelancers for their projects if required. Using a high-quality landscaper is imperative, as they will realise the design and bring it to life.

  • Garden designers don’t generally build gardens (although some do). Nonetheless, they are an important asset and often pivotal to the success of the build. Instead, most use landscaping companies and vice versa, as it tends to be a symbiotic relationship. Perhaps think of it like this – architects don’t build houses, but are an integral part of the build.

Although we don’t currently offer landscaping services, we can assist you in several ways with the build, as outlined in our Services section.

  • There aren’t any regulatory bodies for garden design as such. Organisations such as SGD (Society of Garden Designers) and BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) are paid memberships and are mainly for the benefit of the designer/landscaper for accreditation, networking and endorsement. It is possible to source services through these organisations which can also offer some advice and support for the customer.

For anything with a structural aspect we would always recommend using a structural engineer, as construction must be properly regulated and health & safety must always be adhered to. Any construction drawings produced by ourselves will need to be approved by a structural engineer.

  • Anyone can set-up a garden design business and there are no qualifications required. However, anyone who is serious about their craft will have gained some form of qualification, of which there are numerous options – although there are also some extremely talented self-taught designers.

Spencer considers formal training to be important and is fully qualified, which can be seen in his profile.

  • Masterplan
The main flat plan that forms the basis of the design. We provide separate rendered and annotated plans as we find this the best method to clearly communicate our ideas.

    Planting Plan
A technical plan showing the full latin plant names, position, size and quantity of plants. This is an essential part of plant ordering.

    Elevation
A eye-level view of the garden from any relevant vantage point, usually to support and keyed with a masterplan. These are scale drawings that don’t demonstrate perspective.

    Section Elevation
Similar to an elevation, but also shows a cross-section of the ground. Especially useful for showing level changes and elements of construction. These are scale drawings that don’t demonstrate perspective.

    Construction Plan
A detailed technical drawing of an element that needs full specification, such as a setting-out plan, paving plan or a pergola design. These will show elevations of each relevant view and include detailed measurements. This also includes cross-sections showing the internal construction of walls and structures, etc. These are scale drawings that don’t demonstrate perspective.

    Axonometric Drawing
A three-dimensional elevated view drawn at either 45°/45° or 30/60° (isometric) angles. These are scale drawings that don’t demonstrate perspective, but sit somewhere between a technical drawing and perspective sketch.

    3D Perspective Drawing
A three-dimensional visual drawn from any given angle, that unlike axonometric drawings, demonstrate perspective. These are usually drawn using one-point or two-point perspective. These are not drawn to scale and are purely for visual purposes – although there is a mathematical process to creating these accurately, as an alternative to being merely a loose sketch.

  • Each client, brief and garden are different, therefore all projects are quoted on an individual basis.

The minimum project commission requirement is for a Site Survey and Masterplan or Planting Plan, which is always supplied with the relevant supporting material.

As we are a small company with minimal overheads, we are able to offer competitive prices.

  • This depends entirely on the project.

The design process can be relatively swift. From the initial introductory meeting through to presentation of the final plan can take as little as
4–8 weeks, but is always dependent on the brief, scale and scope of the project, the requirements and existing workload.

From briefing stage to completion of the build can take a year or more, as there’s a lot of planning involved and is also subject to seasonal influences such as construction or planting constraints and availability of contractors – please bear in mind that a good contractor will always be booked-up well in advance. The timeframe will also depend on when the project is commissioned.

We would always recommend to allow plenty of time for the design process and once finalised, not to rush into the build – thorough planning is paramount as mistakes can be costly.

The build can be approached in stages – not everything has to be done at once. What is most important is that the masterplan, groundworks and boundaries are prioritised, as these elements form the framework of the garden and are difficult and expensive to change retrospectively.

  • Groundworks can be carried out at any time of year, but extreme weather and temperatures can impact on hard-landscaping.

Planting out is best undertaken ideally in autumn or spring for herbaceous plants, while some trees, shrubs and plants can be planted or moved in winter – ultimately, availability and each plant will dictate its own planting time. Planting in extreme heat, frost and frozen ground should be avoided. Seasonal timings are one of the reasons the project can take a year or more.

  • We are based in Beckenham in Kent and cover all local and surrounding areas including:
    ❊ Beckenham
    ❊ Bickley
    ❊ Bromley
    ❊ Chislehurst
    ❊ Hayes
    ❊ Keston
    ❊ Knockholt
    ❊ Orpington
    ❊ Petts Wood
    ❊ Sevenoaks

    ❊ Westerham

We also cover a wider radius across the South-East and beyond including:
    ❊ Greater London
    ❊ Kent
    ❊ Surrey
    ❊ Sussex

For some projects we can accommodate areas much further afield, so if you would like to know if we can cover your area, just ask.

  • The initial meetings require no commitment, but any time spent on project briefing and thereafter is chargeable.

If you change your mind and decide not to proceed prior to signing the contract, any time spent for briefing will be charged on a pro rata basis as per our terms & conditions.

You can of course change your mind about your requirements or any aspect of the design at any stage of the process, but this will most likely have cost implications – especially if the brief has been agreed and the design stage is already underway. This is why it is important to ensure there is a clear written brief agreed by both client and designer prior to commencement of any design work.
